The Wright Flyer, aka Kitty Hawk, was the first airplane ever! Designed and built by the Wright brothers, there had never before been a powered, piloted, and human-controlled heavier-than-air aircraft in the world. The Wright Flyer was a canard biplane configuration based on the Wrights' experience testing gliders at Kitty Hawk between 1900 and 1902. Made primarily of giant spruce, a new kind of engine was designed for it, powered by a sprocket chain drive with hand-made twin propellers. In 1904, the Wrights continued refining their designs and piloting techniques in order to obtain a fully-controlled flight. The first-ever flight, in 1905, was a 39-minute, 24-mile nonstop circling flight.
