In the early Spring of 2005, the U.S. Mint released a magnificent new, one-time-only commemorative Nickel honoring the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This is part of the first commemorative Nickel series in history, and it is the first Buffalo Nickel since the classic Buffalo Nickel series of 1913-1938. The coin features a buffalo to symbolize both the American West that the Lewis and Clark Expedition was exploring for the first time, and the wildlife that the expedition encountered on its historic journey from St. Louis to Oregon’s Pacific Ocean coast in 1804-1805.
The 2005 Buffalo Nickel is destined to be one of the most popular coins in modern history. It is reminiscent of the classic 1913-1938 Buffalo Nickel – one of the favorite coins among collectors of all ages. The buffalo design is different from the 1913-1938 coin.
In addition to the unique one-time-only Buffalo reverse design on the 2005 Nickel, this coin also features a new obverse portrait of Thomas Jefferson. This is the first new portrait of Jefferson since the Jefferson Nickel series started in 1938. The portrait is based on the same bust of Jefferson that was used for the original 1938-2004 Nickels, but it has been made age-appropriate to the era of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (when Jefferson was President) by consulting portraits made 200 years ago by legendary American artists Gilbert Stuart and Rembrandt Peale. The word “Liberty” next to Jefferson’s portrait is in Jefferson’s handwriting.
The vast majority of 2005 Buffalo Nickels were released into circulation, where they immediately lost their pristine condition and their premium collector value. Only a tiny fraction will be set aside in original rolls, such as this roll of 40 original 2005 Buffalo Nickels in Mint-fresh Brilliant Uncirculated condition. These coins have never been in circulation or in collectors’ hands, so they are as beautiful and pristine as they were the day they were struck. Collectors prefer coins in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, because they are in top quality and have the greatest chance for future value increases. A roll like this is the perfect way to protect and store the coins.
The 2005 Buffalo Nickel was made for only a few months in early 2005, then the mintage stopped forever. No more of these coins will ever be made, therefore ensuring their scarcity and collector value into the future. 3 1/4 x 1 1/8 x 1 1/8”
