Since 1953, Americans had been having a love affair with the Corvette.® Its sleek lines, bold innovations, and lightning quick power had enamored a generation. Through the years, the affair had seen some stunning changes, particularly in 1963, when the Corvette® Sting Ray™ was introduced, but now in 1968, it was about to be recharged with a new model that was a leap into the future - the 1968 Corvette.® The first major re-styling since the 1963 Sting Ray™, the new Corvette® was a tunneled-backed coupe. With its removable back window and the innovative detachable T-roof, the '68 Corvette® burst with a feeling of wide-open power.

Elegant simplicity, the '68 Vette's clean lines bedazzled the observer. From the back (and most people on the highway saw the '68 Vette from the back!) four round taillights framed the word Corvette simply printed in chrome. In the front the retractable headlights, long a signature of the Corvette®, were retained and wipers that were also retractable were added. Two graceful rises on the hood announced to the world that underneath lay a engine that was not only big but powerful. The '68 Vette's blunt rear deck and its relative absence of chrome made this machine a testament to modern elegance and technological beauty.

The 435 horsepower 427 cubic inch engine on the L-88 was more applicable to racing, and the '68 Corvette® won the GT class at Daytona and Sebring. With its aluminum cylinder heads and intake manifold and its giant 4-barrel carburetor, the L-88 could take to the road like nothing else. Fast by any standards, the '68 Vette was the master of the quarter-mile. Designed for straight-line performance, the car could accelerate at speeds that put a smile on the face of even the most disinterested observer.

And if the car's power and beauty were dazzling the world, its interior was no less impressive. With comfortable seats with plenty of support, a telescoping steering wheel, and a manual four-speed that responded to short, quick throws, sitting inside a '68 Corvette® was nearly as exciting as driving one - but only nearly!

The '68 Vette is a classic in a long line of exceptional cars. Its power and straight-line design will forever be etched in the minds of all who love great automobiles.
