On May 30, 1911, the Indianapolis 500 motor car race was run for the first time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. A 500-mile race around the 2.5-mile track, it was won by Ray Harroun in a Marmon Wasp at an average speed of 74.59 mph.
With the exception of World War I and World War II, the race – also known as the Indy 500 – has been run annually. One of the world’s most important motorsport events, it is held on the last weekend in May to correspond with Memorial Day. The Speedway, nicknamed the “Brickyard,” is the world’s largest sporting venue, and as many as 300,000 people attend the event.
In addition to a cash prize, the winner receives the Borg-Warner Trophy. The most successful drivers were A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr., and Rick Mears with four victories each.
The historic 100th running of the Indy 500 takes place on Sunday, May 29, 2016. 7 1/2" x 4" x 1/4"
