The race day was overshadowed by the heavy rainfall and strong winds of Hurricane Ike. The 22 lap, 125 ccm class race was abandoned after 16 laps; the 250 ccm race was moved to the end of the race schedule on that day and the Moto GP race was abandoned after 20 of 28 laps.
Rossi already achieved his seventh win of the season, this one being his fourth consecutive. In the championship he was 87 points ahead of the second best and close to his next World Championship.
Four races were still ahead and on September 28th, Il Dottore finalized his title ambitions. Hayden was facing problems towards the end of the race and was lucky the race was abandoned, since it saved him a spot on the podium, his first since August 2007. Spanish rider Jorge Lorenzo finished third.
