The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of patriotic pride, liberty and freedom for all who has see her since the statue’s unveiling in October 1886. It is a monumental sculpture, portraying a woman escaping the chains of tyranny, which lie at her feet. Held aloft in her right hand is a flaming torch, representing liberty. Her left hand grasps a tablet on which is inscribed in roman numerals, the date the United States declared its independence, "July 4, 1776." She wears flowing robes, and the seven rays of her spiked crown that jets out into the sky symbolizes the seven seas and continents.

The 1986 Statue of Liberty Coins were authorized by an Act of Congress and minted in 1986 by the U.S. Mint to commemorate the centennial of the Statue of Liberty.

History: The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy.The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

The half-dollar was the first copper-nickel clad half dollar commemorative and depict the United States’ heritage as a nation of immigrants. The obverse was designed by Edgar Steever and pictures a ship of immigrants steaming into New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty in the foreground. The reverse has a scene of an immigrant family with their belongings on the threshold of America.

The Statue of Liberty Silver Dollar, designed by John Mercanti, commemorates Ellis Island as the “Gateway to America”.

The obverse features a classic pose of Liberty in the foreground, with the Ellis Island Immigration Center behind her. On the reverse is a depiction of Liberty’s torch along with the words GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE.
