Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe being photographed by Nahum Baron at her home in Palm Springs, California in 1954. Marilyn Monroe (June 1st, 1926 - August 5th, 1962) is one of the 20th century's most famous movie stars, sex symbol and pop icon.

After acting in small roles for several years, she gradually became known for her comedic skills, sex appeal and screen presence, going on to become one of the most popular movie stars of the 1950s.

Marilyn became a very successful model, appearing on dozens of magazine covers. In 1946 she came to the attention of talent scout Ben Lyon, who arranged a screen test for her with 20th Century Fox. She passed and was offered a standard six-month contract with a starting salary of $75 per week.
