The dime was one of America’s “workhorse” coins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries -- a coin that had considerable spending power. Today, America’s classic dimes are among the most cherished collector coins. They evoke an era of simplicity and of exceptional designs that were created by true artisans. This magnificent collection includes two of America’s most sought-after dimes. The first coin is a Barber Silver Dime from 1892-1916. It was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, Charles E. Barber; it features a classical portrait of Lady Liberty, and it was struck in the beauty of .900 pure silver. The second coin is a Mercury Silver Dime that was designed by famed sculptor Adolph A. Weinman and was minted from 1916-1945. This coin features Liberty in a winged cap to represent freedom of thought – but the design was often mistaken for Mercury, the Roman messenger of the gods who wore wings on his sandals. The name “Mercury Dime” is therefore a mistake! But the name stuck anyway, and it is renowned as one of America’s greatest coin designs. This coin was also struck in .900 pure silver. These two coins disappeared from circulation generations ago, and millions were melted when silver prices spiked. As a result, there are fewer and fewer of these coins available to collectors every year. 3" x 5.5" x .25"
