You could say it was a bicycle powered by a small 25 cubic-inch engine. Or you could say that it was the one that started it all. In either case, even the inventors of the first Harley-Davidson® motorcycle could not have imagined that, 100 years later, their motorcycles would be the most popular in the world. Or that, what they began in a small, 10 x 15 foot structure located in the back of William C. Davidson’s home, would become the birthplace of the most innovative form of transportation that America had ever seen. But that’s exactly what happened.

William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson. Two young men who had an idea—a practical idea. The roads in those days were more like paths than highways, and they felt that a reliable, safe mode of transportation would be a bit more efficient than horses and buggies! William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson were childhood friends who were fascinated by the bicycle fad and captivated by the internal-combustion engine. With the help of Walter Davidson, they challenged themselves and figured out how to make a vehicle that was more than just a bicycle with an engine, and by 1903 they had produced the first working Harley-Davidson® motorcycle!

In 1907, the company was incorporated and produced 150 motorcycles. By 1920, Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. In the early thirties, during the darkest times of the Great Depression, Harley-Davidson took a major gamble by beginning development of a totally new motorcycle model…one that resulted in Harley-Davidson’s® first overhead valve V-Twin engine, a configuration that would remain the Motor Company’s trademark to this day.
