Description
Civil War gold coins have some of the lowest official mintages ever produced - some limited to just over 1,000 pieces - and are genuinely rare in all grades. Adding to that scarcity, many gold coins of that era were melted during the Civil War by the Southern states. Also, on April 5, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an Executive Order forbidding the ownership of gold. Americans were ordered to hand over all gold coins and gold bullion to the U.S. Government for confiscation and melting. The effect was immediate and dramatic. No gold coins were spared from destruction, no matter how rare or beautiful.
Our $1 Civil War Gold Coin includes a Certificate of Authenticity bearing the signature mark of Jay W. Johnson, former Director of the U.S. Mint. Each coin is in Very Fine or Better Condition, individually protected in a house slab and housed in a handsome cherrywood-finish display case.
